A fictional version of Nicolas Cage is stuck in his career and strained with his ex-wife and daughter. He takes a one million dollar job to appear at a Mallorca billionaire superfan’s birthday party. CIA agents then recruit him and say the fan is an arms dealer who kidnapped a Catalan politician’s daughter. Cage bonds with the superfan and leans into his movie star persona. He later learns the real criminal is the fan’s cousin and works on reconciling with his family through meetings with a hallucinated younger self.
Audience-visible progressive casting is light and not the main point of the story. Tiffany Haddish plays the lead CIA agent who recruits Cage and runs the mission, while her partner is secondary and dies earlier. The rest of the film stays focused on celebrity self-mythology, buddy friendship, family repair, and a spy crime plot. Dialogue and themes do not push activist identity politics, and the Catalonia kidnapping works as a thriller device rather than a social message. The movie reads mainly as meta action comedy and Cage self-parody.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
Woke representation / casting
The modern setting has a mixed cast, but that is not the focus. Tiffany Haddish plays the main, skilled CIA agent who hires Cage and leads the job. Her partner is less central and dies earlier. This is a mild “capable minority boss” choice, not a full diversity-first cast plan.
18%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Dialogue centers on career anxiety, fandom, filmmaking, family conflict, and the spy/crime plot with no activist identity, DEI, or modern social-justice rhetoric.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Core themes are celebrity self-mythology, buddy friendship, and family redemption; the Catalonia kidnapping is a thriller MacGuffin, not present-day identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. CIA bungling and Hollywood status anxiety serve the comedy-thriller without sustained activist attacks on Western cultural or religious institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Original meta premise with a fictionalized Cage and no identity-driven swaps of established franchise characters or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful anti-woke or DEI backlash found. Reception was largely positive on craft and Cage–Pascal chemistry.
0%
Creator track record context
Writers, producers, and Cage score very low on activist history, roughly in the single digits to low teens. The casting director scores higher for general industry representation talk. Key creatives still show little identity-driven record tied to this film.
