Bill Nordheim moves his American family to a remote farm in the snowy mountains of Norway after he inherits the property from a relative. He hopes to turn the old barn into a bed and breakfast and start a happier life with his wife Carol, teenage daughter Nora, and young son Lucas. Lucas discovers a barn elf who protects the land and warns the family to avoid bright lights, loud noise, and changes to the farm. Bill ignores the warning, so the elf attacks the family and forces them to fight for their lives. The film mixes bloody horror with broad Christmas comedy and jokes about Americans and Norwegians.
The film has a few audience-visible political and culture-clash points. Bill praises Norway's social democracy, and a later conversation contrasts Norwegian dialogue with American gun culture while naming the Oslo Agreement. Carol and Nora also work together during the attack while Bill is often foolish and avoids hard problems. These moments are brief and serve the family story and comedy, while the main lesson is that outsiders should respect local folklore, nature, and old traditions.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for There's Something in the Barn.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film uses a mixed cast in a modern Norway setting, including a Norwegian actress with Nepalese and Ukrainian roots in the main family role and a woman as the local police officer. The movie does not frame these choices as a diversity goal or build a representation-first cast.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film praises Norway's social democracy in a joke about taxes and public services. A later exchange contrasts Norway's use of dialogue with American gun culture. The same exchange names the Oslo Agreement and peace between Israel and the Palestinians. These lines are brief and played as culture-clash comedy rather than a sustained political lesson.
25%
Identity-driven story themes
The film gives Carol and Nora a short action stretch where they protect each other during the attack. Bill is often foolish and avoids family problems, while the women help keep the family alive. The story also asks outsiders to respect Norwegian folklore and old customs. These ideas stay tied to family repair and comedy, so the identity-driven message is mild.
16%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film praises Norway's tax-funded system and jokes that Americans rely too much on guns. A Norwegian man presents dialogue and compromise as better than shooting, and he names the Oslo Agreement. The family is also shown as loud outsiders who try to turn a traditional barn into a business. The critique stays in short culture-clash jokes and does not attack Christianity, patriarchy, or Western society as a whole.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story built around Norwegian barn-elf folklore. It does not change an established modern character or a real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke reaction. Other audience and review pages discuss the horror, humor, family, or culture jokes without calling the film woke or DEI-driven.

Creator track record context
The cached score for director Magnus Martens is 8/100, and the cached score for writer Aleksander Kirkwood Brown is 0/100. Martin Starr is also cached at 8/100, while most listed producers score in the low range. Pierre Mazars has a higher cached score because his company slate includes films about colonial history and queer characters, but that is background context.
