Trick follows Detective Mike Denver as he hunts Patrick “Trick” Weaver, a masked killer who returns each Halloween. The story moves through small towns along New York’s Hudson River after a 2015 party massacre. Denver believes Trick survived, while Sheriff Lisa Jayne trusts the evidence that says the killer is dead. The film uses a grim, fast, and very bloody tone, with police work, chase scenes, sudden attacks, and several twists.
Trick has little direct woke content. The main cast includes a black detective, a woman sheriff, and a female survivor, but the movie does not present their identities as a political message. Lisa and Cheryl fight back against the killer, while Denver stays the main investigator, so the women’s strength serves the horror plot rather than a repeated gender lesson. A short party joke tells Trick to kiss another boy, but the story does not build a queer character, relationship, or identity theme from it. The main ideas are fear, obsession, online worship of a killer, and the danger of turning a murderer into a legend.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Trick.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts a black detective, a woman sheriff, and a female survivor in major action roles. That is a visible mix in a small-town horror story, but the modern Hudson Valley setting makes it plausible. The movie does not call attention to race or gender, and its marketing does not present the cast as a diversity project. This is a mild casting signal, not a representation-first design.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on killings, police work, fear, and Halloween. No lines push DEI, identity politics, gender activism, or a modern social campaign.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film gives Sheriff Lisa Jayne and survivor Cheryl Winston important action roles. Lisa leads police work, and Cheryl fights the killer and helps stop him. Their strength creates a mild female-competence signal. The movie does not turn that strength into a lesson about women, race, sexuality, or identity.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The police and FBI fail to stop the killer, and Denver loses his job because of his obsession. Those events serve the mystery and do not become a modern attack on police, family, religion, capitalism, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Trick is an original 2019 horror story with no established book, franchise character, or real event being reworked. The changing masks and copycats are plot devices, not identity changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The X research pass found no anti-woke reaction. Reddit, audience reviews, and news coverage discuss gore, plot holes, and the ending rather than DEI or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer are known mainly for horror and have low recorded scores. The producers have no clear public activist profile. Casting director Judy Bowman has a stronger diversity-focused public record. The film itself does not use identity messaging, so this remains a small context signal.
