Venom is a 2018 science-fiction action movie set in modern San Francisco. The story follows Eddie Brock, a disgraced investigative reporter trying to rebuild his career. While investigating a shady lab, Eddie accidentally bonds with an aggressive alien parasite named Venom. Together, they must learn to live together and fight a greedy tech billionaire who wants to force human evolution. The film is a fast-paced buddy comedy that focuses on the chaotic relationship between these two main characters. The narrative stays focused on classic sci-fi action and humor, featuring a traditional battle between an anti-hero and a corrupt boss. The main villain is played by a British-Pakistani actor, which changes his race from the white character in the comic books. However, this casting choice is treated as normal and contains no political or activist messaging. The story focuses entirely on survival and a chaotic partnership.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Venom.
Woke representation / casting
The movie has some diverse casting, such as Riz Ahmed playing a villain who was originally white in the comics. However, this is standard modern casting for a San Francisco setting and is not treated as an activist statement. Michelle Williams plays a competent female character who briefly becomes She-Venom, which is accurate to comic book lore rather than a girlboss trope. The diversity is background-level and does not distract from the story.
25%
Woke political dialogue
The script has almost no political or activist dialogue. The villain talks about saving the human race from climate change and overpopulation, which is a standard sci-fi trope for a bad guy rather than modern social justice lecturing. There are no discussions of modern political topics, identity, or systemic social issues.
5%
Identity-driven story themes
The main story is a buddy comedy about a man and an alien parasite. While some online fans and queer theorists read their close relationship and a brief kiss as romantic or queer-coded subtext, the film itself does not present any actual, confirmed LGBTQ+ themes or characters. The narrative focuses on action, comedy, and survival.
8%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film features a classic bad corporation that hurts homeless people for science. This is a very common action movie trope rather than a modern activist attack on Western culture, capitalism, or traditional values. The story does not push messages about toxic masculinity, patriarchy, or systemic guilt.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
The movie changes the race of the comic book villain Carlton Drake by casting a British-Pakistani actor. This change has no impact on the story and was not promoted as a diversity initiative. Other details, like She-Venom, come directly from older comic book stories rather than modern ideological changes.
15%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
There was almost no public backlash accusing this film of pushing a woke agenda. A few jokes were made online about pronouns due to promotional taglines, but these were minor and not taken seriously. The vast majority of viewers and critics discussed the film's quality and silliness rather than politics.
5%
Creator track record context
The creative team behind the film has an incredibly low average score on activist and social justice issues. Most directors, writers, and producers involved have spent their careers working on mainstream Hollywood films with no history of political activism or identity-driven storytelling.
