This 2023 Netflix film follows George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley from school friends to huge 1980s pop stars as Wham!. It uses old videos, photos, and their own spoken memories to show how the pair built hits, fame, and a tight bond. The story covers their short run at the top and why the band ended when George was ready to go solo. The tone is bright, fun, and full of catchy songs and scrapbook-style nostalgia.
The film’s main woke-related thread is George’s private struggle with being gay while Wham! sold him as a teen heartthrob. He tells Andrew he is gay or bisexual; he talks about staying quiet for family and career reasons; and he links some songs to his attraction to men. A normal viewer will notice these parts, but the film is still mostly about friendship, hits, and fame, not a modern activist lecture. There is no big identity casting plan, no major political speechifying, and no wide anti-woke backlash. The overall woke push is moderate and tied to real life story beats, not forced DEI messaging.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for WHAM!.
Woke representation / casting
Real-person music doc about George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, not a cast-built drama. Who appears is who lived the story. Multi-heritage family backgrounds and a black backup singer exist in the real band history but are not sold as a diversity casting project. Low score fits: no quota-style lead picks or identity-first casting signal.
8%
Woke political dialogue
Speech is personal archive talk about fame, friendship, labels, and George’s private life. Viewers hear him discuss being gay or bisexual, staying quiet for his dad and career, and feeling trapped by the heartthrob act. That is identity-related talk, not slogan-style activist lines or party politics. Mild score only.
20%
Identity-driven story themes
Friendship and pop success drive the film, but George’s closeted gay life is a clear, emotional subplot: coming out to Andrew, hiding from family, writing about attraction to men, and the pain of playing a straight idol. LGBTQ+ material is confirmed and easy to notice, so it lifts this score, though the movie is not a pure queer-agenda or pride-first project.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Touches 1980s music-press mockery, industry pressure, and why staying closeted seemed safer for a mega-star path. Also notes a strict home. This is period fame and family pressure, not a modern lecture on patriarchy, whiteness, or Western guilt. Light institutional heat only.
22%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No meaningful right-leaning or anti-woke campaign treating WHAM! as DEI propaganda or forced identity politics. Public talk was mostly warm nostalgia and empathy, not “too woke” outrage.
0%
Creator track record context
Key team averages low on stored woke scores. Smith and Ruhemann at 0; Emhoff and Halfon near single digits; Battsek at 25 with some progressive social-doc credits. For this film, creative messaging stayed friendship-and-archive focused, matching a low overall crew context score.
