Char is a quiet teenager who lives in a North Dublin housing estate with her mother Angela and grandmother Rita. Angela has been unwell and often stays in bed, so Char carries adult worries while trying to survive school. After Angela disappears and returns acting like a different person, Char tries to learn what happened. The movie uses a slow, tense style and mixes family drama with disturbing supernatural horror drawn from old Irish stories about fairy beings that replace people.
The story puts three generations of women at the center, and most important characters are female. The film also hints at a queer bond between Char and her school friend Suzanne. The film gives this relationship only a few quiet moments, so it does not become the main plot. The main themes are family pain, mental illness, bullying, growing up too soon, and old Irish beliefs rather than modern political activism.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for You Are Not My Mother.
Woke representation / casting
The film has a female-heavy cast because its core family and school story follows women. Dolan also framed the movie as a story about strong women from different generations, which adds a small representation signal. The roles are not presented as a diversity campaign, and the main characters are not chosen to show a broad identity mix. The casting signal is noticeable but limited.
22%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film does not use modern identity, DEI, or activist speeches. Its dialogue focuses on family secrets, mental illness, bullying, and Irish folklore.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film is built around three generations of women and the hard choices they make. Char and Suzanne share a quiet queer bond that adds an identity theme to the coming-of-age story. The family story also shows the pressure placed on mothers and the pain passed between generations. These ideas recur through the movie, but the film does not turn them into a direct political lesson.
40%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The Catholic girls’ school is a setting for bullying, but the film does not make a modern attack on Christianity, men, family, or Western institutions. The horror comes from Irish folklore, mental illness, and family trauma.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about Char, Angela, and Rita. Its use of Irish changeling folklore does not change an established character or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke posts, boycott talk, or review-bombing. Web and Reddit reaction mostly discussed Irish folklore, mental illness, family tension, and horror quality. No clear anti-woke complaint was found in the reviewed coverage.

Kate Dolan’s supplied creator profile gives her a 47/100 woke score. She is an LGBTQ filmmaker whose short Little Doll centers on a girl’s same-sex crush, and she has supported stronger LGBT representation. She also described Char and Suzanne as queer and spoke about strong women across generations in this film. Other cached crew scores are low or modest, though Celine Haddad and Stephen Kelliher have some queer or gender-expression credits.
