2020–2022 · Based on 2 seasons through November 28, 2022 ·
Avenue 5 follows Ryan Clark, a space captain who pretends to be more skilled than he is. A small ship failure sends a luxury cruise far off course. The crew and passengers must survive for years while food, trust, and order slowly disappear. The show uses dark jokes about panic, greed, bad leaders, and human stupidity.
The show gives several major jobs to women and people of color, including engineer Billie, mission leader Rav, and executive Iris. Season 2 also includes a same-sex marriage and a nontraditional three-person relationship. The show often mocks billionaires, private companies, political leaders, and public relations teams. These ideas appear often, but the main focus stays on absurd comedy and human incompetence.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Avenue 5.
Woke representation / casting
The show gives several important jobs to women and people of color. Billie is a black female engineer who often helps save the ship. Rav is a black female mission leader, and Iris is a Japanese female executive with strong control over events. The pattern is noticeable, but the future setting gives the mixed crew a believable reason.
38%
Woke political dialogue
The show repeatedly jokes about presidents, elections, public messaging, and government failure. Season 2 includes rival leaders and arguments about who should control the ship. The dialogue is political, but it does not often push modern identity politics.
17%
Identity-driven story themes
The show includes a nontraditional three-person relationship and a same-sex marriage near the end. The show treats these relationships as part of normal future life rather than as a main lesson. Women also often appear more capable than the men around them.
44%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show repeatedly attacks profit-first space travel and corporate image control. The billionaire owner often values his brand and comfort over safety. The story also mocks weak government responses, but it mostly presents these ideas as broad satire instead of a detailed activist message.
