2016–2017 · Based on 2 seasons ·
Dirk Gently is a strange detective who believes that every event connects to every other event. Todd Brotzman becomes his unwilling helper after a murder draws them into a huge mystery. Their cases include secret experiments, time travel, body swaps, strange powers, and a fantasy world. The show stays fast, violent, funny, and unusual across both seasons. The show gives major roles to women, includes a bisexual police deputy, and follows a gay romance between two princes in season two. These identity elements become clearer later, but they do not replace the main mystery or comedy. The story mainly explores fate, friendship, personal damage, free will, and the danger of powerful groups. The show includes little political dialogue or modern activist content, so these elements matter without controlling the story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
Woke representation / casting
The show gives major roles to a diverse group of characters, including Farah, Bart, Tina, and Panto. Season two centers on a gay romance between two princes, and a Lebanese actor plays one of the leading roles. Cast interviews describe the gay leads and their relationship as meaningful representation. The pattern is clear in important roles, but the series does not make diversity its main subject.
42%
Woke political dialogue
Tina openly identifies as bisexual during the series. Season two also includes sexual jokes and scenes involving a love spell. These moments show identity and sexuality, but the dialogue does not deliver activist speeches or direct political messages. The political signal remains brief.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
Season two gives the love between Panto and Silas a continuing role in the story. Tina’s bisexual identity also appears more than once. Several women hold key skills, power, or leadership roles. These themes are visible across the later season, but the main story still follows mystery, fate, friendship, and supernatural danger. Identity matters in parts of the show rather than defining the whole premise.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Reddit viewer said that the amount of wokeness in season two helped ruin the show. The claim came from a single audience comment with no clear wider spread. X research found no matching complaint. Major coverage did not treat the show as a woke controversy.
8%
Creator track record context
Max Landis has a low stored score and a mainly genre-focused career. Most other key writers and directors also have conventional television and film records. Tamra Davis has a repeated focus on women in film. Douglas Mackinnon and Paco Cabezas have some diversity or gender-focused work. The wider pattern is mild and mixed rather than strongly activist.
