Mira is an American movie star who feels tired of big studio films and a recent breakup. She travels to Paris to play Irma Vep in a remake of the silent crime serial Les Vampires. The director, René, struggles with his health, his past, and the pressure to make the project work. Mira becomes deeply involved with the character as filming mixes with her real life. The show has a strange, playful, and sometimes serious tone.
The clearest woke element is Mira’s past relationship with Laurie, her female former assistant. Their breakup and renewed attraction return across the season, making queer romance a visible part of the story. The show also gives Mira a strong central role and comments on how female stars are judged more closely than reckless male actors. Most of the story focuses on filmmaking, fame, old movies, streaming, personal failure, and the line between acting and real life.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Irma Vep.
Woke representation / casting
The show places several identity-visible characters in important roles, including Mira’s former female partner, a black film director, a black assistant, and a Latina character. The modern film industry setting makes this mix believable. The queer relationship adds a clear representation element.
15%
Woke political dialogue
The show includes direct talk about intimacy directors, sex scenes, ratings, marketing, and the treatment of women in Hollywood. These points connect to modern gender and workplace debates. The show does not build its story around party politics or activist speeches.
12%
Identity-driven story themes
Mira’s past relationship with Laurie is a recurring part of the season. Their attraction and breakup affect Mira’s choices and emotional state. The show also follows a woman trying to control her image in a male-led film business. Queer identity is visible, but filmmaking remains the main subject.
55%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show repeatedly criticizes Hollywood’s blockbuster system, streaming business, marketing culture, and celebrity pressure. It also shows Mira being judged more harshly than reckless male actors. The criticism is mainly about the film business rather than a broad attack on Western society.
25%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series changes the older film’s story and lead character, but no clear identity-driven reason for those changes was reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No strong anti-woke backlash was found. Public complaints mainly concerned the show’s pace, style, or self-important tone.
0%
Creator track record context
Assayas has a low cached score and no strong DEI activist profile. Vikander has publicly supported feminism, #MeToo, and Black Lives Matter. Nandan and Sekoff have worked on representation-focused projects. This context raises the score somewhat, but it is not the show’s main subject.
