2020 · Based on 1 season, 9 episodes through September 10, 2020 ·
Julie Molina is a teenage student in Los Angeles who has stopped singing since her mother died. She finds three teenage ghosts from a 1990s band in her mother's music studio, and they help her build a new band. Julie must balance grief, school pressure, family rules, friendships, and a growing pull toward music and Luke. The show mixes bright pop songs, jokes, romance, and a gentle ghost story with heavier moments about death and family pain.
The clearest woke element is the steady LGBTQ story around Alex, an openly gay drummer, and Willie, a male ghost who becomes his love interest. Their bond appears across much of the season, and the show treats their friendship and romance as normal and good. Julie and her family are presented as a Latino family, while her black best friend Flynn has a strong supporting role. The show also gives Julie control of the band and centers her talent, but its main story remains grief, music, friendship, and finding courage.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Julie and the Phantoms.
Woke representation / casting
Julie is a Latina lead, and her family is also presented as Latino. Flynn, Julie's closest friend, is black and has a strong supporting role. The show uses present-day Los Angeles, where this mix is believable. Creator interviews describe the Latina lead as a planned representation choice, giving the casting a moderate identity signal.
30%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters do not argue about elections, parties, laws, or activist causes. The show talks about grief, friendship, music, and acceptance instead of making political speeches.

Identity-driven story themes
Alex is openly gay, and Willie becomes his male love interest. Their relationship appears in several episodes and helps drive the story when Willie is drawn into Caleb's ghost club. The show presents Alex's friends as accepting and treats the romance as a good, normal part of teen life. Julie's grief and music journey remain the main story.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show says Alex's parents did not accept him after he came out, and it presents that rejection as wrong. Alex finds safety with his friends, which supports a chosen-family message. Julie also leads a mixed-gender band and often makes key decisions. The show does not build a wider attack on religion, capitalism, or Western institutions.
16%
Woke character or canon changes
The Netflix show is based on the 2011 Brazilian series Julie e os Fantasmas. The earlier story centers on Julie and her male ghost bandmates, with a boy-girl romance around Julie. The Netflix version adds openly gay Alex and his romance with Willie as a continuing subplot. That change is identity-driven, although it affects one part of the story rather than the whole premise.
42%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One later fan comment said the show's diversity and LGBTQ representation could feel pushed to appear “woke.” The comment was part of a positive fan thread and did not describe a boycott or organized campaign. No major news report showed a broad anti-woke backlash.

Creator track record context
Dan Cross and David Hoge have cached scores of 4/100 each. Kenny Ortega has a cached score of 58/100 and a public history of LGBTQ advocacy. Leah Keith has a cached score of 55/100, while Jason La Padura has a cached score of 52/100. Most other supplied creative scores are low, so the overall context is mixed.
