2021–2023 · Based on 2 seasons through November 9, 2023 ·
Loki is a sci-fi and fantasy show about a different version of the god of mischief. After he steals a powerful cube and breaks the timeline, a group outside of time called the TVA arrests him. They say he must help stop a bigger threat or be wiped out. He works with agents, meets other versions of himself, and faces hard choices about free will, power, and who he wants to be. The tone mixes mystery, humor, action, and big emotional moments across two seasons.
The score is pulled up most by clear LGBTQ identity moments and how hard the show and its season 1 director pushed them as a big deal. In season 1, Loki says he has dated both princes and princesses, and a TVA file labels his sex as fluid. Director Kate Herron said making Loki bi was a personal goal tied to her own identity. Viewers also see a major female Loki variant named Sylvie and a diverse set of powerful supporting roles. The main story still centers on time travel, free will, and stopping multiverse danger, not on politics lectures. Season 2 leans even more into friendship, time problems, and sacrifice, and almost never returns to the bi line. A normal viewer will notice the bi reveal and the diverse cast; the rest of the plot feels more like a clever multiverse adventure than an identity sermon.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Loki.
Woke representation / casting
Lead is still Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. Big supporting roles include black women in power (Renslayer, B-15), Majors as the Kang-type threat, and Asian talent like Ke Huy Quan and Eugene Cordero. Sylvie is a major female Loki variant. B-15 was rewritten from male for Mosaku. Pattern fits modern MCU diversity casting more than pure story need, but the TVA setting is multiversal so race is not a setting clash. Queer lead identity adds weight.
48%
Woke political dialogue
The clearest line is Loki’s short bi confirmation with Sylvie. There is little sermon-style talk about race, gender systems, or modern party politics. Most talk is about free will, time rules, lies, and who Loki is. That bi line is short but was meant to land as a big identity statement, so it lifts this above a pure “none” score.
36%
Identity-driven story themes
Core arc is free will, friendship, power, and Loki choosing purpose over chaos. LGBTQ identity is real on screen and in marketing, but not the engine of most episodes. Season 1 makes bi/genderfluid status visible; season 2 barely follows up. Romance is mainly Loki–Sylvie. Queer elements get extra weight under scoring rules, but this is not a queer-first story overall.
54%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The TVA is a cold time police force that erases people and hides the truth. That is anti-tyranny and anti-bureaucracy sci-fi, not modern attacks on capitalism, whiteness, patriarchy, or faith. No strong toxic-masculinity or anti-Christian focus. Mild critique of control and propaganda only.
20%
Woke character or canon changes
MCU Loki is made openly bi and marked genderfluid on purpose, with the director selling it as a representation win. Comics already had queer Loki, so this is less a full rewrite than a deliberate MCU identity update. Sylvie as a female Loki variant draws on Lady Loki ideas. B-15’s gender was changed in development for casting. Score targets identity-driven MCU canon shifts, not ordinary plot changes.
55%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Clear complaints that the bi reveal and genderfluid file were forced, virtue-signaling, or Disney agenda. Some fans mock female Loki / identity framing. Backlash is real but not the main public story; the show was also praised and often spared the worst “MCU is ruined” pile-ons aimed at other titles. Pro-DEI “not queer enough” complaints are ignored here.
44%
Creator track record context
Season 1 director Kate Herron (73) strongly pushed bi canon as personal representation. Casting director Sarah Halley Finn (51) and writer Bisha K. Ali (51) add moderate diversity/representation context. Most other key writers and season 2 directors score low teens to low 20s. Overall mid-range when weighted by who shaped identity moments vs later plot craft.
