2022 · Based on 1 season, 8 episodes through April 28, 2022 ·
That Dirty Black Bag follows Red Bill, a quiet bounty hunter who cuts off the heads of wanted men and carries them in a black bag. He enters the dry town of Greenvale while hunting Bronson, the man who killed his mother. Sheriff Arthur McCoy tries to control the town, but his own past ties him to Bronson. The story follows a struggle over gold, land, and revenge. It has a grim tone, dark humor, and very graphic violence. The clearest woke element is the repeated focus on women who make their own choices in a harsh male world. Eve runs the Red Lantern brothel, takes charge when McCoy is gone, and tries to secure water for the whole town. Symone rejects marriage, stays loyal to Eve, and later bargains for money and a safer life. The show also uses a diverse cast, including an Asian deputy, a black landowner, and a native fighter, but it does not build the plot around modern identity politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for That Dirty Black Bag.
Woke representation / casting
The show gives prominent roles to an Asian deputy, a black landowner, and a native fighter in its late-19th-century Western. Ivan Shaw publicly described the Asian deputy as a rare chance in this genre and linked the part to seeing people like him in that setting. The two central rivals are white, and the story does not make race the main subject. The visible pattern is clear, but it is not the design of most major roles.
38%
Woke political dialogue
Eve says that women cannot survive in this world without power. Nathan presses Symone to become a deputy’s wife, and she refuses. The season has no repeated modern speeches about DEI, current politics, or activist causes, so this remains a small gender signal.
15%
Identity-driven story themes
Eve runs the Red Lantern brothel and takes control of Greenvale while McCoy is away. Symone rejects marriage, stays loyal to Eve, and later negotiates money and travel plans for herself. Eve kills Nathan after he attacks Symone, and the women’s choices shape the town’s crisis across several episodes. Red Bill and McCoy still drive the main revenge story, so this is an important subplot rather than the whole season.
44%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The story shows a corrupt sheriff, a greedy landowner, political power, and abuse of law. Those conflicts stay inside the historical Western plot and are not turned into a modern attack on Western culture, Christianity, or family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show grew from Mauro Aragoni’s own earlier western short and web project, but the available record shows no race, gender, sexuality, or hero-role change to an established character. The new women and minority characters are part of the expanded story, not documented canon swaps.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke complaints. Other discussion mainly praised the western or criticized its plot and pacing, and right-leaning praise that it was not woke is not backlash.
0%
Creator track record context
Not present. Mauro Aragoni’s record centers on genre films, Sardinian heritage, westerns, and horror. Marcello Izzo and Silvia Ebreul are tied to researched crime and history stories, with no clear activist, DEI, identity-first, or anti-conservative pattern.
