The Kominsky Method is a comedy-drama series about two aging friends navigating their golden years in Los Angeles. The main characters deal with physical decline, grief, and the struggle to understand a rapidly changing world. Woke elements are virtually absent from the core plot. Instead, the show frequently mocks modern political correctness and hyper-sensitive youth. There are occasional references to gender pronouns and progressive culture, but they are presented through a highly critical and humorous lens.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Kominsky Method.
Woke representation / casting
The show has a mostly older, traditional cast. However, there are minor, incidental elements like diverse millennial acting students and a satirical guest spot by Morgan Freeman playing a gender-fluid character. While these roles are used for comedy, their inclusion introduces contemporary identity elements into the cast.
35%
Woke political dialogue
The show generally mocks political correctness, but it contains brief, highly visible dialogue about modern gender terms. In Season 3, a comedic scene features dialogue detailing non-binary pronouns and gender-neutral terms. Although written to spoof these requirements, the direct discussion of these terms adds a notable, albeit mocked, LGBTQ+ element.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
The core narrative is centered around aging, physical decline, grief, and friendship. It does not focus on identity politics, systemic oppression, or activist messaging. The small subplots involving modern cultural changes are used as comedic tools to show how the elderly characters struggle to understand the modern world.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The series does not critique Western culture or institutions from a social-justice framework. It satirizes the entertainment industry's superficiality and ageism. It actually defends traditional values like enduring friendship, marital loyalty, and resilience against modern activist sensitivity.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original series and does not feature any changes to established characters or source material.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
There is virtually no organized anti-woke backlash against this series. Most audiences recognized it as being highly critical of modern political correctness. A few scattered viewers expressed mild annoyance at the creator's general Hollywood liberal leanings or a brief political joke about Donald Trump, but such complaints are extremely minor.
5%
Creator track record context
The show's creative team represents a mix of traditional Hollywood liberals. Creator Chuck Lorre has a low woke score of 26, often mocking PC culture while holding standard liberal views. Writer David Javerbaum has a higher score of 75 for his progressive activism, and producer Marlis Pujol has a score of 60 for promoting diversity representation. However, the majority of the creative team, including directors Andy Tennant and Donald Petrie, have no history of pushing activist agendas.
