2017–2018 · Based on 2 seasons through April 3, 2018 ·
The Mick follows Mackenzie “Mickey” Murphy, a broke woman from Rhode Island who uses bad language and lives recklessly. She suddenly becomes guardian to her sister’s three children in a rich Greenwich, Connecticut home after their parents flee the country to avoid fraud charges. Mickey tries to control Sabrina, Chip, and Ben while she keeps drinking, smoking, scheming, and making reckless choices. The show uses crude jokes, wild injuries, sex jokes, drugs, and bad parenting instead of warm family lessons.
Several episodes use clear identity and liberal themes. The pilot and “The Buffer” talk about Planned Parenthood, birth control, women’s freedom, and “your body, your choice.” “The New Girl” has Mickey put Ben in a dress, present him as a transgender student, call him gender-fluid, and tell him he need not use labels. Season 2 adds Sabrina dating Alexis, a lesbian great-grandmother, and a gay friend for Jimmy, but these stories appear in a few episodes rather than driving the whole show.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Mick.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main family is white, and Alba is a Latina housekeeper in a modern rich household. The show does not present its casting as a diversity goal or build a representation-first group.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The pilot has Sabrina say she is attending a gender-equality fundraiser for Planned Parenthood and calls the group health care for women. “The Buffer” has Mickey repeat “your body, your choice” and say birth control helped women join the workforce. “The New Girl” uses diversity, LGBTQ, and gender-fluid language during Ben’s school fight. These ideas appear in a few episodes, but they do not guide most of the series.
44%
Identity-driven story themes
“The New Girl” makes Ben’s dress and school entry a full story, and Mickey presents him as transgender before calling him gender-fluid. The episode also has Ben ask whether liking a girl makes him a lesbian, and Mickey tells him not to use labels. Season 2 adds Sabrina’s girlfriend Alexis, a lesbian great-grandmother, and a gay friend for Jimmy. These identity stories recur across several episodes, but they remain side plots in a crude family comedy.
39%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show repeatedly mocks rich Connecticut families, male entitlement, and macho school culture. “The Snitch” shows wealthy white lacrosse boys sharing a girl’s nude photo and treating aggression as a badge of honor. “The Church” treats church leaders and belief as comic material, but it does not make Christianity the main target. The criticism stays inside crude sitcom jokes instead of becoming a broad political message.
23%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series is an original sitcom, so it does not rewrite an established character, source, or historical figure. Ben’s dress and school plot are new story content, not a change to existing canon.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
NOM urged supporters to cancel the show after reading Ben’s trailer scene as transgender propaganda, and PinkNews reported about 4,765 petition signatures. The Parents Television Council filed an FCC complaint and called the Planned Parenthood, birth-control, and gender material liberal propaganda. NewsBusters repeated similar claims during Season 2, while no anti-woke reaction was found on X. The backlash was organized but came from a small number of advocacy sites.
35%
Creator track record context
Creators Dave and John Chernin describe the show as a dark, twisted version of the traditional family sitcom and focus on comedy rather than activism. Most writers and directors have no known activist record. Eva Longoria is an exception because of her Democratic work and representation advocacy, and Kat Coiro has made gender-focused public comments. The team gives some supporting context, but the main creators do not show a strong activist pattern.
