2025 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through July 10, 2025 ·
Jessica Salmon is a heartbroken New Yorker who moves to London after her seven-year relationship ends. She takes a job making a Christmas advertisement and hopes the city will give her a fresh start. She meets Felix Remen, a gentle but troubled indie musician who is trying to stay sober. The show mixes raunchy jokes, sad family stories, messy romance, and a strange fairy-tale view of Britain.
Jessica’s private videos about her ex’s new fiancée keep pulling her back into the old relationship. The story follows her abortion, her anger at men who belittle or use women, and her fight to make a Christmas ad less sexual and more welcoming to girls. A black American co-worker, Kim, slowly accepts that she is attracted to women and begins a romance with Josie. Boss is openly gay, and several episodes use queer jokes and dating talk as part of the office world. These ideas are clear and recurring, but the main story remains Jessica and Felix learning to accept their own damage and still choose love.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Too Much.
Woke representation / casting
Too Much centers a white New York woman and a British-Japanese musician, which fits a modern London and New York setting. The show gives a black American co-worker a continuing lesbian story and gives a gay male co-worker a large comic role. A South Asian bandmate and a Japanese mother also recur in the supporting cast. The pattern is visible, but the show does not frame the whole cast as a diversity project or make identity the main reason for every role.
38%
Woke political dialogue
Jess calls herself a feminist and says women are judged as messy in ways men are not. Characters mention Me Too, land acknowledgements, sexualization, abortion, and a Christmas ad that should be feminist. Jess later pushes the team to cast Rita Ora as Santa and says the ad should challenge beauty rules. These lines return in several episodes, but they stay inside jokes and work or relationship scenes instead of becoming long political speeches.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
Jessica’s central problem is her fear that she is too much for men and that she must shrink herself to be loved. Her abortion, anger at a cold ex, and push to change a sexualized ad give the season a repeated female-focused message. Kim first says she is not gay, then sleeps with Josie and accepts her queer side. Boss remains an openly gay and proudly queer office character across the season. Romance, addiction, family pain, and grief still take more space than these identity themes.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show repeatedly presents men who belittle, abandon, or sexualize women as selfish or damaged. Jess calls a male director an ass-grabber who escaped Me Too, and she later takes control when a man tries to make a Christmas ad use a sexy female image. The story mocks old rules about women’s looks and treats family roles as sources of pressure. The show jokes about Christian men and traditional marriage, but it does not make an attack on Christianity or Western institutions its main point.
44%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Too Much is an original series that draws partly from its creators’ lives. It does not adapt a book, remake known characters, or retell a real historical event with identity changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Mainstream reviews and viewer threads criticized pacing, acting, chemistry, and the show’s similarity to Girls. No clear anti-woke or anti-left backlash about DEI, identity politics, or activist messaging appeared in the reviewed coverage.

Creator track record context
Lena Dunham has a long public record of feminist and social-issue work. Several writers, including Pat Regan, Collier Meyerson, and Rachel De-Lahay, have strong queer, race, immigration, or representation-focused records. Janicza Bravo and producer Surian Fletcher-Jones add a smaller identity-focused signal. Luis Felber and several other credited writers and producers have little activist record, so the group is mixed. This gives the title strong creator track record context, but it does not make every scene political.
