2022 · Based on 1 season, 8 episodes through July 29, 2022 ·
Uncoupled follows Michael Lawson, a wealthy New York real estate agent in his late 40s. His husband, Colin, leaves him after 17 years together, so Michael must rebuild his life while trying to understand what went wrong. His friends Suzanne, Billy, and Stanley push him back into work, parties, dating apps, and new relationships. The show mixes breakup drama with bright comedy, sex jokes, luxury apartments, and the fast pace of Manhattan life.
The show's most visible social theme is its focus on gay men living, dating, and having sex in New York. Michael uses Grindr, learns about PrEP medicine, and meets men while he moves through shock, anger, grief, and acceptance. Billy's casual hookups, Stanley's loneliness, and other gay relationships keep same-sex romance in the center of the season. The season also touches on age, body image, and the fear that older gay men can be pushed aside by younger dating culture.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Uncoupled.
Woke representation / casting
The main cast is built around a gay lead and several gay men who are his husband, friends, dates, neighbors, and co-workers. The show gives these characters the leading roles instead of limiting them to one side character. A black gay weatherman and a black straight woman also hold major supporting roles. Identity stays visible through the full season.
75%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about dating, PrEP medicine, sex, and breakups. The season does not use repeated political speeches or activist arguments.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story centers on Michael as a gay man who loses his husband and must enter gay dating again. Every episode follows his same-sex relationships, hookups, or effort to understand gay social life. Billy and Stanley have their own gay dating problems, and the season includes Grindr, PrEP medicine, Gay Ski Weekend, and open talk about sex. The show treats queer love, marriage, friendship, and dating as normal parts of adult life.
90%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show points to a gay dating culture that favors youth, thin bodies, and trendy men. Stanley's loneliness and Michael's fear of being too old show the cost of those standards. The season does not make a broad attack on religion, family, capitalism, or other Western institutions.
15%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original story about Michael and Colin. It does not change established characters, source material, or real historical events.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Movieguide published a conservative review that warned viewers away because the season centers gay sex, dating, and same-sex relationships. That is a clear but isolated complaint against the show's LGBTQ message. No large boycott or broad anti-woke campaign tied to this title was found.
15%
Creator track record context
Jeffrey Richman is openly gay and has a history of LGBTQ representation in Modern Family. Abraham Higginbotham has worked in gay-issues advocacy, and Ira Madison III often writes about queer representation, race, and politics. Aeysha Carr has promoted black-led stories, while Neil Patrick Harris adds public LGBTQ visibility as a producer and actor. Darren Star has a milder, character-first profile, so the team has a mixed but clear identity-focused track record.
