22 vs. Earth is a six-minute Pixar short set in the Great Before, where new souls prepare to enter life. 22 is an old and bitter soul who refuses to go to Earth because every friend she makes leaves her behind. She recruits five young souls and leads them in a playful plan to stop other souls from finding their spark. She steals objects that might inspire them, but the plan fails when the recruits discover their own interests and leave her one by one. The bright and silly tone shows that 22’s actions come from deep loneliness.
The short focuses on friendship, fear of change, loss, and the search for purpose. The story does not show a clear woke message through its characters, dialogue, political ideas, or social themes. 22 leads the rebellion, but the short does not present her female role as a diversity message. A quick joke mentions not needing another politician, but the story does not support a current party or activist cause. The story instead uses a fantasy setting to explore ordinary feelings, and it leaves the meaning of life partly open when Macaroni finds inspiration after staying with 22.
