Lena is a biologist and former soldier. Her husband comes home from a secret mission very sick and changed. She joins a team that walks into the Shimmer, a strange glowing zone in the wild where plants, animals, and even people start to mix and mutate. The film is quiet, scary, and strange. It feels more like a dream and a horror trip than a normal action movie.
The story is mostly about fear, guilt, marriage, and how people hurt themselves. The team is all women, including skilled scientists, and one character is openly gay. Viewers will notice the all-women crew and the mixed-race cast. They will also hear one clear mention that a teammate likes women. The big ideas are self-harm, change, and the alien zone, not lectures about race, gender politics, or modern activism. Normal viewers will spot the women-led team and the gay character more than any political message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Annihilation.
Woke representation / casting
The mission team is all women experts, which is easy to notice. The group is also racially mixed in a modern U.S. setting, with Tessa Thompson as a physicist and Gina Rodriguez as a strong paramedic. Anya is clearly gay. This looks like careful representation in the main roles, not a historical race swap. It stops short of pure “girlboss” dominance because the women fail, panic, and die.

Identity-driven story themes
The core story is grief, cheating, mutation, and people destroying themselves, not a race or gender rights plot. A small but real identity note is Anya’s lesbian identity, which is said out loud. The all-women team shapes who we watch, but the film does not turn that into an activist message about patriarchy or modern identity politics.

Creator track record context
Garland’s work leans thoughtful and political in a broad way but not hard activist. VanderMeer brings eco and nature concerns. Casting leads sit in a moderate industry-diversity range. Producers show little public identity activism. Overall this is a mild, not strong, woke crew signal for this title.
