Going in Style is a light heist comedy remake about three lifelong Brooklyn friends named Joe, Willie, and Albert. They rob a bank tied to the corporate deal that wiped out their steel-mill pensions. Joe faces foreclosure, Willie hides kidney failure and distance from family, and their retirement savings disappear. They train for a clumsy stickup in Rat Pack costumes, keep the money for loved ones and lodge friends, and walk free. Buddy chemistry, family pressure, health fears, and soft anger at banks drive the story.
The film is not built on race, gender, queer, or activist identity politics. Talk on screen centers on canceled pensions, a variable-rate mortgage and foreclosure threat, and bank and corporate coldness. That is classic stick it to the bank talk, not race, gender, or diversity-framed activism. The bank and corporate pension changes act as personal comic villains in a broad everyone hates banks setup. There are no LGBTQ storylines, no race-first messaging, and no gender-politics plots.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Going in Style.
Woke representation / casting
The film uses a modern Brooklyn group with Morgan Freeman as one of three equal elderly male leads and multiethnic supporting players. That fits a present-day New York setting. Race is not a plot theme and was not sold as a diversity statement. Women stay in family and romance support roles rather than empowerment-centered leads.
10%
Woke political dialogue
Talk centers on canceled pensions, a mortgage and foreclosure threat, and bank and corporate coldness. That is classic stick it to the bank populism. It is not race, gender, or DEI-framed rhetoric. Critics noted only light topical color, not a full activist script.
12%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Core story is male friendship, aging dignity, providing for family, health crisis, and a comic heist with no LGBTQ arcs or race or gender politics plotlines.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The bank and corporate pension changes are the villains in a personal comic way. The energy is broad economic populism and generic institutional heartlessness. It is not modern activist framing around whiteness, patriarchy, colonial guilt, or cultural deconstruction of Western norms.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Remake changes are commercial and comic updates of a 1979 old-men premise, not identity-driven rewrites of known characters or history.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful anti-woke campaign treats the film as a DEI or agenda product. Public talk is about the cast and heist premise.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached context raises the average slightly through Melfi’s Hidden Figures work and Kaufman’s identity-heavy résumé elsewhere. Zach Braff reads as character-driven progressive-leaning comedy rather than hard activism. This film itself does not continue Hidden Figures–style identity storytelling.
