Tom and Janet have been married for 14 years, but they still act like newlyweds and have sex several times a day. Their friends think this happiness is strange, so the couple joins them for a tense weekend at a large rental house. A strange man arrives with a serum that he says will fix Tom and Janet’s supposed problem, and Janet kills him after he threatens them. The movie then turns into a dark, strange mix of romance, comedy, science fiction, and thriller as hidden affairs, lies, and abuse come to light.
The film shows a lesbian married couple among the friends, and it presents their relationship as a normal part of the group. Janet works outside the home while Tom works from home, cooks, and does laundry, so the movie flips common husband and wife roles. Gretel reveals that Richard has abused her, and she kills him before beginning a new relationship. These details give the story mild identity and gender-role themes, but the main story stays focused on marriage, sex, trust, jealousy, and the fear that lasting happiness is unnatural.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Happily.
Woke representation / casting
The friend group includes Carla and Maude, a married lesbian couple. The group also visibly mixes several ethnic backgrounds. These roles matter during the weekend story, so the pattern is audience-visible. The film does not frame the casting as an empowerment or diversity statement, and the modern setting makes the mix plausible.
26%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about sex, marriage, jealousy, lying, and abuse. The film has no clear modern identity, DEI, or activist political lines.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film includes a married lesbian couple as a normal part of the friend group. It also gives Janet the office job while Tom stays home, cooks, and does laundry. The story lets Gretel expose an abusive man and escape him. These details create mild identity-driven and gender-role themes, but the main conflict is about marriage and secrets.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film briefly flips common household roles because Janet works at an office while Tom works from home and handles chores. It also presents Richard’s abuse of Gretel as a serious wrong and lets Gretel escape him. These scenes question some old ideas about husbands, wives, and male control. The movie does not make a wider attack on men, family, religion, capitalism, or Western institutions.
16%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original screenplay about newly invented characters. It does not adapt a book, franchise, canon, or real historical story.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The X research pass found no anti-woke reaction. Searches of Reddit, YouTube, audience reviews, and news found complaints about the odd plot or weak ending, not claims about woke, DEI, or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
BenDavid Grabinski has no public record of political activism or identity-driven work, and his interview framed the film as an offbeat romance mixed with Twilight Zone-style unease. Jack Black has supported liberal causes such as climate and voter work, but no title-specific political message was reported. Casting director Jenny Jue has advocated for more Asian American and Pacific Islander representation. The other stored crew summaries show little activist or identity-focused activity.
