A young woman drives through snow with her new boyfriend Jake to meet his parents on a remote farm. She keeps thinking about leaving him. The house visit turns strange: names change, ages jump around, and nothing quite matches. The tone is cold, quiet, and dreamlike, like a mind coming apart.
The movie is mainly about loneliness, regret, aging, and a life that never really started. Most of what we watch seems to live inside one lonely man’s head. Viewers may notice a car argument about the song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” which uses modern consent talk. There is also a short line where the woman says she was out with her girlfriend, and the story shows how a man can invent a whole partner in his mind. Those bits are small. The big pull is sadness, memory, and weird mind games, not a big social-justice message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for I'm Thinking of Ending Things.
Woke representation / casting
Leads and key parents are a standard prestige cast (Buckley, Plemons, Collette, Thewlis). No clear race or gender “quota” pattern or identity swaps in the story world. Diversity is not sold as the point.
0%
Woke political dialogue
One clear scene argues over “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” with modern consent-era talking points. Elsewhere, talk is poems, movies, and weird family chat. Politics show up, but they do not run the whole movie. There is also a short line where the woman says she was out with her girlfriend.
25%
Identity-driven story themes
Core themes are loneliness, regret, aging, and a fake self inside someone’s mind. How men invent women, plus a brief “girlfriend/anniversary” line, add light gender/queer notes. This is not a race- or activism-first story.
17%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Mild friction with old gender norms and awkward family life. No big lecture on capitalism, colonial guilt, or tearing down Western systems. Personal pain drives the film more than system-blame.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear right-leaning “this is woke propaganda” wave. Pushback is mostly “confusing” or “pretentious,” or left critique that it is not feminist enough, which does not count here.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached scores for Kaufman, Reid, Wilches, and main producers are low; no strong pattern of DEI or identity-politics campaigning tied to this team.
