Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for In Your Dreams.
Woke representation / casting
The movie features a mixed-race Asian-American and White family as the main characters. While this fits the modern Minnesota setting, the choice reflects a deliberate focus on diverse on-screen representation. This was actively highlighted by the director as an effort to promote AAPI visibility. However, there are no queer or LGBTQ elements in the cast or characters, which keeps the score moderate.

Identity-driven story themes
The story contains very light identity themes. It portrays a diverse, mixed-race family dealing with realistic domestic conflict. The narrative touches on modern family dynamics, such as destigmatizing divorce and supporting a mother who wants to pursue her career. However, these themes remain in the background, as the main plot is about sibling love and growing up.
35%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film mildly shifts away from traditional family structures by normalizing parental separation and showing a mother as the primary career seeker. It does not actively mock traditional values or attack Western institutions. Instead, it presents a gentle lesson on facing real-life changes rather than wishing for a perfect fantasy.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
There was almost no public backlash. Some conservative review outlets labeled the film as slightly progressive or "Woke-ish". This was due to its focus on career-driven mothers and normalizing divorce for kids. However, there was no major outcry, and most parents found the film to be harmless.
