Jeff and Karen Gaffney are an ordinary suburban couple in Atlanta who feel restless after their kids leave home. Their glamorous new neighbors, Tim and Natalie Jones, seem perfect at first. The Gaffneys soon learn that Tim and Natalie are secret spies. The couple gets pulled into chases, spy tricks, and a late team-up to stop a traitor tied to a defense contractor. The film is a light action comedy about marriage ruts, neighbor envy, and silly spy farce.
Identity politics are not the point of the movie. The story stays on empty-nest marriage, status envy, and spy hijinks rather than social justice themes. The main identity-adjacent beat is a short dressing-room flirtation and same-sex kiss between the wives, used for comic thrills instead of a queer life story. A throwaway Caitlyn Jenner gag works as zeitgeist comedy, not activist dialogue. Viewers hunting for heavy DEI or speech-heavy messaging will find almost none of it.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Keeping Up with the Joneses.
Woke representation / casting
The leads are a standard white suburban couple opposite a glamorous spy duo. Gal Gadot’s lethal female operative sits next to Jon Hamm as normal genre casting, not a diversity-first lead pattern. Minor Asian workplace and support roles fit the setting. The brief same-sex flirt and kiss is a stunt gag, not queer character casting.
10%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No activist or identity-politics speeches. Dialogue is espionage, marriage, and suburban banter, and the Caitlyn Jenner one-liner is pop-culture joking rather than progressive messaging.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Core arcs are empty-nest marriage, neighbor envy, and spy farce. One dressing-room seduction and kiss between the wives is incidental queer content used for laughs and thrills. It is not a queer identity storyline or a social-justice theme.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
There is light consumer-status comedy about keeping up with neighbors and a defense-contractor mole plot. There is no modern activist attack on patriarchy, whiteness, Christianity, or Western institutions.
5%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original screenplay, not adapted legacy characters or history.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No notable right-leaning or anti-woke campaign against the film. Criticism targeted dull humor and box-office flop status.
0%
Creator track record context
The main creative voice is commercial comedy from Mottola and LeSieur with mainstream producers Parkes and MacDonald. A secondary AD credit for H.H. Cooper includes DEI-committee and race-film work. That secondary credit does not shape this film’s content or marketing.
