Earthrealm’s fighters face a new war when Outworld’s ruler Shao Kahn attacks after losing the last tournament. Raiden helps set up one last Mortal Kombat contest that will decide if Earth survives. Liu Kang steps up as the main champion while Scorpion and Sub-Zero chase a dangerous magic item tied to the god Shinnok. The tone is bloody, fast, and packed with one-on-one fights across fantasy worlds.
This film is mainly a loud tournament and clan-war story. The big ideas are family bonds, honor after revenge, and people teaming up to stop a tyrant and a world-ending threat. Fighters like Sonya, Kitana, and Jade are tough in the same way the old games always made them. Jax, Liu Kang, and others match long-running game looks and roles. Romance is straight-pair only (Johnny and Sonya, Liu Kang and Kitana). A normal viewer would see gore, catchphrases, and crowded fight plots far more than modern identity lectures or activist messaging.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms.
Woke representation / casting
Cast diversity matches long-running game characters (Jax, Liu Kang, Sonya, Kitana, Jade). Tough women and mixed races are franchise defaults, not new quota-style casting or identity swaps. Viewers see game-faithful heroes, not a modern DEI showcase.
5%
Woke political dialogue
Lines center on tournaments, revenge, honor, and stopping invaders. No clear activist speech about race, gender ideology, or present-day social justice. Banter stays action-movie and game-flavored.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Core arcs are chosen-one growth, father-son care (Raiden/Liu Kang), brotherhood (Scorpion/Sub-Zero, Liu/Kung Lao), and beating tyrants. Kitana’s turn against Shao Kahn follows classic Edenia freedom lore, not modern identity politics. No LGBTQ plot.
3%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Conflict is fantasy tyranny (Shao Kahn, Shinnok) and realm survival. That is not a critique of Western churches, capitalism, “toxic masculinity,” or today’s conservative norms. Anti-tyrant fights alone do not score high here.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Changes are compression and fan-service mashups of game eras. No race/gender swaps or identity-driven rewrites of known characters for DEI goals.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No meaningful anti-woke or right-leaning campaign treated this film as pushing DEI, queer messaging, or left activist content. Complaints were about plot clutter and quality.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached scores for director, writers, and main producers are very low (mostly craft and franchise work). Adams’s public talk for this title is family, honor, and mythology—not activism.
