Red is a short-tempered outcast bird on Bird Island who is forced into anger management with other misfits. Green pigs led by Leonard arrive claiming to be explorers, and only Red stays suspicious. The pigs party the birds into dropping their guard, steal the eggs, and flee to Piggy Island. The flock then launches a slingshot rescue to get the eggs back. The film focuses on friendship, justified anger, family stakes, and careful trust of outsiders.
The main identity-related content is a very brief same-sex bird couple that GLAAD noted in the background. That couple is not a major plot arc and does not drive the story. The heroes of the action remain the male trio and Mighty Eagle, with Matilda and Stella in support roles. There is no activist speech or modern identity politics as the engine of the plot. Public talk more often treated the film as an outsider-invasion story than as woke messaging.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Angry Birds Movie.
Woke representation / casting
A brief on-screen lesbian couple is the main identity-visible choice and keeps this above zero. Multiethnic supporting voice talent is ordinary 2010s comedy casting for cartoon birds. The heroes stay male-led with Matilda and Stella in support, not as girlboss leads.
22%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No modern activist, DEI, or identity-politics speech. Dialogue is slapstick, anger gags, and family-rescue setup.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Core arcs are outcast vindication, protecting eggs and families, and stopping deceptive invaders. The incidental same-sex couple does not structure the narrative. Immigration and colonial readings are outside overlays, not clear activist identity themes in the story itself.
23%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. No sustained attack on toxic masculinity, patriarchy, Christianity, or Western institutions as systems of oppression. Community niceness and gullibility are mocked, male heroes are competent when it counts, and family defense is affirmed.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Game icons get ordinary comedy backstories and anthropomorphism. There are no ideological race or gender swaps of established historical or legacy human characters. Later franchise queer confirmations are not 2016 rewrites of known canon people.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No sustained anti-woke complaint that the film pushes a woke or DEI agenda. Contested talk ran the other way as anti-immigration allegory interest and left discomfort with xenophobia readings, or as non-ideological game-movie criticism.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached scores point to low activist patterns for directors, writers, and producers on this title. Careers sit in industry comedy and animation without a high-confidence DEI public pattern tied to this film’s content. Casting director context is modestly higher but still limited for this package.
