In 1946, Juliet Ashton is a London writer who is looking for a new subject after the Second World War. A letter from farmer Dawsey Adams leads her to Guernsey, where islanders formed a book club during German rule. Juliet studies the group, uncovers what happened to its brave founder Elizabeth McKenna, and grows close to Dawsey and the child Kit. The film mixes romance, humor, grief, and memories of war.
Juliet often argues that women should have the same power and respect as men. She rejects a rich boyfriend who tries to control her work and travel, then chooses her own path in love and writing. Elizabeth is praised for making brave choices, helping a child, and refusing to follow the rules around her. Juliet’s publisher Sidney is gay, but that fact is brief and does not drive the main story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society.
Woke representation / casting
The film gives Juliet’s close publisher, Sidney Stark, a gay identity. Sidney is a named supporting character, but the story mentions this part of him only briefly. The rest of the main cast is largely white and fits the British setting in 1946. The film does not show a diversity-first casting pattern.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Juliet and the islanders have a long debate about Anne Brontë, the status of women, and equality between men and women. Juliet also pushes back when Sidney says Mark may not let her travel. Juliet later rejects Mark after his control and anger become clear. These lines make gender equality visible, but they appear in a few scenes rather than throughout the film.
32%
Identity-driven story themes
Juliet’s main story follows a woman who wants control over her work, travel, and future. She turns down a wealthy man who treats marriage as a way to control her. Elizabeth is praised for breaking social rules, protecting a child, and choosing love during the occupation. The film ends with Juliet choosing her own partner and asking him to marry her. The romance and war story remain bigger than the gender message.
43%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Mark’s controlling behavior and treats his view of Juliet as something he owns as wrong. Juliet rejects the idea that a man must give her permission to travel or choose her work. The island’s harsh gossip also attacks Elizabeth for loving a German man, and Juliet stands against that judgment. The film questions old gender and social rules, but it does not attack modern Western institutions as a main subject.
25%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film shortens and combines parts of the book, but no confirmed identity-related change to a main character appears.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research found no anti-woke reaction or boycott talk. Other searches found complaints about pacing, sweetness, and changes from the book, not claims that the film pushes DEI or identity politics.

Creator track record context
Mike Newell’s stored score is 0, and the writers’ stored scores run from 0 to 24. Their summaries show mainstream drama, literary adaptation, and romance work without a strong activist pattern. Most producers also have low stored scores, while Paula Mazur has older feminist stage work and Mitchell Kaplan has recent progressive activism. The key creative record is not identity-focused overall.
