The Housemaid

The core of the movie is a feminist revenge fantasy centered on female solidarity. Two women from different social classes join forces to defeat a wealthy, manipulative husband who abuses them. The movie concludes with the main character becoming a vigilante who travels to other households to help rescue abused wives, making female empowerment and survival the driving themes of the story. No LGBTQ+ elements are present.

The film presents a strong critique of traditional gender roles and the traditional wealthy family structure. It portrays the "tradwife" ideal and domestic perfection as tools used by a toxic, abusive male to trap and torture women. The traditional household setup is framed not as a source of safety, but as a dangerous mechanism of male oppression, which directly targets conservative family values.

The film faced noticeable backlash from conservative and right-leaning online reviewers. Critics labeled the movie a "woke trap" and accused it of pushing an anti-male, feminist agenda. They argued that the story unfairly paints traditional family setups as abusive and bad.

The key creative team is a mix of politically neutral figures and active Hollywood progressives. Director Paul Feig has a history of gender-swapped and female-led films, while producers Laura Allen Fischer and Carly Kleinbart Elter actively champion DEI initiatives. This is balanced by author Freida McFadden and actress Sydney Sweeney, who generally avoid identity politics.
