Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Magician's Elephant.
Woke representation / casting
The movie uses very diverse voice actors for a fantasy setting based on old Europe. Characters like Leo, the Countess, and the King are played by black and Asian actors. The movie also features interracial couples. These casting choices feel like modern identity representation rather than story necessity. There are no queer elements in this movie, which keeps the score from going higher.
37%
Woke political dialogue
The movie does not have any political dialogue. The characters talk about magic, hope, family, and completing tasks. There are no social justice lectures or modern political debates in the script.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story is a simple fairy tale about finding family, believing in hope, and helping a community. It does not focus on modern identity politics. It does not teach about systemic oppression or privilege.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie has some typical fairy tale tropes about silly leaders, like the king and a funny police chief. Peter's guardian is a harsh retired soldier who lied to him. However, these are standard tropes about authority. They are not modern activist attacks on Western institutions or traditional family values. The local nuns and church are shown as kind.
3%
Woke character or canon changes
The movie makes the setting of the original book much more diverse. The book takes place in a historic European town. The movie changes many characters to have different ethnic backgrounds. These changes feel like they were made to fit modern representation rules.
25%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
There were a few complaints on online forums about the casting. Some viewers felt the diverse cast and interracial couples felt forced for a historic European setting. However, there was no major public backlash or widespread political controversy.
25%
Creator track record context
Most of the directors, writers, and producers have a score of zero. They have no history of political activism or social justice work. Author Kate DiCamillo has a score of 20 for supporting progressive causes in children's books, and casting director Mary Hidalgo has a score of 11. This keeps the creator track record score very low.
