Lars is a failing soap opera director, and Lisa is an actress whose career has stalled. The married couple travels to a remote lakeside cabin while pretending that a quiet weekend can repair their relationship. Each spouse secretly plans to kill the other for money, freedom, or revenge. Three escaped prisoners soon take over the cabin, and the couple must work together against a harsher danger. The film uses black comedy, crude jokes, sharp insults, sudden twists, and very graphic violence.
The clearest woke elements are brief references to the Me Too movement and a gendered power pattern. Lars dismisses an actress's complaint about being told to remove her top, while Lisa calls the behavior creepy. The film gives Lisa the sharper plan and steadier nerve, and her money bargain and acting trick protect Lars while he is often the weak or foolish partner. That female-led power reversal is noticeable, but the film does not connect it to a wider activist message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Trip.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Lisa is written as Swedish and Lars is Norwegian, while the other prominent roles are mostly Norwegian. No repeated representation-first casting pattern or identity-framed lead choice is visible in the film.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The couple briefly argues about a director telling an actress to remove her top at an audition. Lars calls the complaint “Me Too bullshit” and tries to defend the request. Lisa calls him creepy. The exchange ends quickly and does not become a wider political speech.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
Lisa repeatedly has the sharper plan and the steadier nerve in the marriage fight. She spots Lars's weak murder plan, bargains with the kidnappers to protect him, and uses her acting skills to lure Roy into a trap. Lars is a debt-ridden, sexually mocked, and often helpless husband who needs Lisa's quick thinking. This female-led power reversal drives much of the dark comedy, but the film does not connect it to a wider activist message.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Lars defends an audition where a director asked an actress to remove her top. Lisa calls the conduct creepy, which gives a brief modern critique of male entitlement in entertainment. The film also shows men threatening sexual violence, but those criminals are cruel villains rather than part of a wider attack on men or Western institutions. This signal is short and isolated.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The Trip uses original characters and has no established canon or real historical figures to reinterpret. No race, gender, sexuality, or leadership change to a known character is part of the story.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke posts about this film. Indexed Reddit, review, and news discussion focused on gore, sexual threats, crude humor, and tone rather than woke, DEI, or identity-politics complaints.

Creator track record context
Tommy Wirkola's cached score is 10/100, and his work is mainly horror-comedy and action. John Niven and Nick Ball have cached scores of 4/100 and 1/100, with no strong activist record. The listed producers and script supervisor also have low cached scores. Aram Tertzakian's 19/100 score reflects Armenian history and political support, not Western DEI. This context adds only a very weak signal.
