Ben is a self-centered New York writer who wants a hit podcast. He learns that Abilene, a Texas woman he only casually dated, has died. Her brother Ty says it was murder, not an overdose. Ben flies to West Texas, joins the family, and turns their pain into a true-crime story while the case gets darker and stranger.
The movie is mainly about coastal vs. small-town America, fake news and podcast greed, empty dating, and how people use each other’s grief. Viewers will notice the podcast idea “Dead White Girl,” jokes about cultural appropriation, Ben’s snobby city talk, and long talks about the country splitting in two. There is light social-issue talk and media satire, but the story mostly mocks Ben as much as it teases Texas. Identity politics are not the main engine; culture clash and media use of tragedy are.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Vengeance.
Woke representation / casting
Modern setting with Issa Rae as a sharp black female podcast producer in a key support role. Texas family leads are mostly white. Looks like ordinary contemporary casting more than a heavy quota push, but the “smart media woman of color” role is audience-visible.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Clear talk about America’s divides, conspiracy habits, class snobbery, and a podcast sold as “Dead White Girl.” Cultural-appropriation banter and Ben’s angry rant at the Texas family land as liberal culture-war jokes. Often satirical, not pure sermon.
38%
Identity-driven story themes
Core arc is media greed, empty hookups, opioid death, and red/blue stereotypes—not race, gender, or queer identity as the main plot engine. Race-aware “dead white girl” true-crime framing is present but secondary.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Strong satire of coastal media elites, podcast culture, and how both sides feed on images and stories. Also digs at empty male dating and rural conspiracy thinking. Critiques American media and culture more than it runs a pure left activist playbook.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Daily Wire and some conservative posts called it a blue-state agenda film that talks down to Texas. Real but limited; not a huge nationwide anti-woke storm.
28%
Creator track record context
Main creative voice Novak is cached at 0 with satire of progressive hypocrisy; supporting producers mostly low; Blum mildly higher. Overall crew track is not activist-first.
