Hayley and James are university students who have been dating in secret. They say goodbye at a London train station before going to their families for Christmas, but each jumps onto the other person’s train. Heavy snow leaves Hayley at James’s rich country house in Gloucestershire and sends James to Hayley’s noisy family home in Macclesfield. The light romantic comedy follows their awkward lies, family secrets, and efforts to get home.
The film gives Hayley a mixed-race family with a black mother and a White father, and it makes that family warm, close, and full of life. James’s rich and titled family is colder, more formal, and tied to old military and class habits. The story says that money and social rank do not bring the same happiness as love, family, and belonging. Hayley’s race is visible, but the story uses it as part of a family portrait rather than as a political conflict.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Your Christmas or Mine?.
Woke representation / casting
Hayley is a mixed-race young woman with a black mother and a White father. Her family is a major part of the film, and the cast presents that home as warm and close. The film does not use diversity slogans or say that her identity makes her special. This creates a mild representation signal, but the modern British setting makes the casting believable.
18%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue covers romance, family secrets, class manners, grief, and Christmas. The characters do not give identity, DEI, or activist speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story repeatedly contrasts Hayley’s poorer but happier family with James’s rich and unhappy family. The ending says love and family matter more than money, status, and old social rules. That gives the movie a mild social message about class and belonging. The plot does not center race, sexuality, or activist identity politics.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
James hides that he left the family’s expected military path to study drama. The film treats the father’s old family rules as cold and limiting before he accepts James’s choice. The story also makes the rich household look less happy than the working-class home. These are mild challenges to class and old family expectations, not a modern attack on Western institutions.
8%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original romantic comedy. It does not change a known character, story, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A Reddit commenter described a song in the film as a “woke version” of “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” The post gave no clear reason and did not draw a wider campaign. Other indexed reviews and audience posts focused on the romance, class jokes, and Christmas comedy. The indexed soundtrack does not name that song, so the complaint is especially weak. The separate X check found no anti-woke reaction.
4%
Creator track record context
Jim O’Hanlon has no known activist record, and Tom Parry is mainly a mainstream comedy writer. The producers have mainly worked in mainstream comedy and television. Rachel Freck has a mild diversity-focused casting record. The combined creator background adds a small signal, but it does not point to a strong activist project.
