2019–2021 · Based on 2 seasons through January 27, 2021 ·
Bonding follows Tiff, a New York City psychology graduate student who works as a dominatrix at night. She hires Pete, her gay best friend from high school, to help with clients after he struggles to find work and perform stand-up comedy. Their short jobs in the BDSM world bring old feelings, new lovers, and serious trust problems back into their friendship. The show uses dark jokes and fast episodes to mix sex, embarrassment, friendship, and personal growth.
Both seasons make Pete’s gay identity, male sexuality, and the search for sexual freedom part of the main story. The show treats kink and sex work as ways for characters to face shame, change their relationships, and learn about consent. Tiff also says traditional ideas about masculinity trap people, while other scenes joke about Republicans, abortion, and gender rules. Season two gives these ideas more room through a professional BDSM community, lessons about responsibility, and a story about sharing personal work without permission.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Bonding.
Woke representation / casting
Pete is a gay man in one of the two lead roles, and his identity is visible in his dating life, sex scenes, and personal growth. Season two adds Black pro-domme Mistress Mira and more real sex workers from the New York BDSM community. The choices fit the New York setting and the story’s sex-work world, so the casting does not look like a forced mix of identities. Netflix and interviews still present the show as queer television, giving the identity choices extra audience-visible focus.
35%
Woke political dialogue
Tiff says that masculinity is a social prison and that the sexual patriarchy must die before all genders are equal. Another episode uses a joke that only Republicans want separate bathrooms. A comedy set says abortion would be easy to get if men had periods. Season two adds a men’s class that talks about sexism, toxic masculinity, and the patriarchy. These lines recur across the two seasons, but they do not control every episode.
42%
Identity-driven story themes
Pete’s gay identity and male sexuality drive his relationships, work, and self-discovery in both seasons. Tiff’s dominatrix work makes sexual freedom, shame, and nontraditional desire part of the main story. The pair repeatedly learn about consent, boundaries, coming out, and the right to choose unusual forms of intimacy. Season two deepens these themes through a queer BDSM community and Pete’s fight over sharing their private story. These identity-driven themes are central rather than side plots.
82%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show treats traditional masculinity as a trap that pushes men to hide emotion and control others. Tiff presents BDSM as a way to escape shame and the sexual patriarchy. Season two uses a men’s growth class to challenge sexism, toxic masculinity, and the patriarchy. The show also mocks Republicans and treats strict gender rules as narrow. These ideas recur, but the series stays focused on friendship and comedy instead of building a full political argument.

Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original story and does not change established characters, canon, or real historical figures.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A NewsBusters article attacked the show for calling masculinity a social prison, praising BDSM as liberation from shame, and joking about Republicans and abortion. Broader coverage focused on BDSM accuracy, consent, and harm to sex workers rather than woke politics. The separate X research pass found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaints. The clear anti-woke complaint was real but limited.

Creator track record context
Rightor Doyle is a gay writer and director whose work often centers queer characters and sexual themes. Doyle has spoken about a duty to tell queer stories and has made projects aimed at gay audiences. In a Bonding interview, Doyle said he wanted to use BDSM to discuss sex positivity and understanding. His track record gives the show strong identity-driven context beyond its plot.
